As the metal temperature increases or decreases the dimensional changes due to thermal expansion or contraction creates excessive stress in piping, ducting or vessels, large forces & stresses are transmitted to anchors & connected equipments. For controlling such forces & stresses the most modern designers prefer the use of stainless steel metal bellows & expansion joints, because they require less space than bends, loops & because their inherent flexibility enables them to absorb movements in more than one direction thereby permitting greater freedom in design.
