As the metal temperature increases or decreases the dimensional changes due to thermal expansion or contraction creates excessive stress in piping, ducting or vessels, large forces & stresses are transmitted to anchors & connected equipments.
For controlling such forces & stresses the most modern designers prefer the use of ss metallic bellows & expansion joints, because they require less space than bends, loops & because their inherent flexibility enables them to absorb movements in more than one direction thereby permitting greater freedom in design.
Expansion joints prove to be more economical than other devices since their use results in lower initial costs for piping & construction work. Operating costs and maintenance being reduced as well.
